History Of Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used throughout history for a variety of wellness applications. The Egyptians were one of the first to use aromatic essential oils extensively in medical practice, food preparation, religious ceremony and beauty treatment. The early Egyptians are well renowned for their incredible use of Therapeutic Essential Oils and spices in embalming. Oils like Myrrh, Cedarwood, Cypress and Spikenard were used. Myrrh, Sandalwood, Frankincense and Cinnamon were seen as very valuable cargo along caravan trade routes and were used sometimes in exchange for gold. The preparation of the therapeutic Essential Oils was highly important to the Egyptians. They set aside rooms for this purpose in each of the Egyptian temples.Therapeutic oils were also offered to their gods. The Pharaoh and his family had complete formulas drawn up for the different perfumes they required.

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are natural oils typically obtained by distillation from the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants and having the characteristic odor of the plant or other source from which it was extracted. Essential oils occur naturally in many food items such as fruits, nuts, vegetables, spices and herbs. The oils protect plants against predators and disease and also serves as fragrance to people. However, essential oils have been used for centuries in many cultures for medicinal and therapeutic benefits. There is however a renewed interest in its revival and new discovery of its health applications.
